Hey foodie lovers!

Any yummy shake has been a serious craving of mine lately, but this healthy chocolate protein shake has become my absolute favorite. Maybe it’s because I’m breastfeeding and needing those extra snacks throughout the day, or maybe the postpartum cravings are coming in hot. Either way, this shake is to die for!
We tend to go through a TON of bananas in our household. When our bananas get overly ripe, I’ll cut them up into small pieces and throw them in a freezer storage bag for shakes and smoothies. We generally have frozen bananas on hand because it’s a great alternative for ice cream or frozen yogurt.

An added health benefit – this shake is vegan, dairy-free, AND gluten-free, with the option of being nut-free. It’s not only packed with protein, but lots of energy fueling goodness!
This healthy shake is a great midnight snack for us breastfeeding mamas. I make mine before bed so it’s ready to go in the middle of the night and I’m not waking the whole house up by flipping on the blender. Before maternity leave, I favored this healthy chocolate protein shake in the morning as a quick breakfast option before work. If you want an extra boost in the morning, you can also add one fourth cup of quick oats, one tablespoon of slivered almonds, and/or one tablespoon of instant coffee.

The consistency is a smooth, buttery feel rather than chunky and watered down. I’m a big fan of smooth shakes; It’s most similar to a Wendy’s frosty. Friends, there are ways to trick your mind into thinking your body is getting the sweets it’s craving by finding healthy options. This shake is definitely one of those!
One of my favorite things about this shake is that it curbs my FLAMING sweet tooth. Too often, and at least once each day, I get a major craving for sweets. I’m a serious chocolate lover, so this shake keeps me on track with my health and fitness goals.

The recipe calls for frozen bananas, unsweetened almond milk, cocoa powder and chocolate protein powder. You have the option of adding instant coffee, quick oats or slivered almonds for a healthy boost for a morning shake.
I also had a pretty sweet little helper. So, great news if you’re a parent, this healthy shake is kid-approved! My daughter is not quite two and a half and SHE asks ME to, “make shake, mama. Make shake!!!” Like I said, absolutely delicious for any snack, at any time of the day!
Healthy Chocolate Protein Shake
5 mins
Serves 1
  • 1/2 cup frozen banana pieces
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (or any nut butter)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (I’ve used the FitMiss protein powder in the past and liked the taste)
  • Handful of ice (approx. 5-7 cubes)

  • Optional: (if made for breakfast or an energy boost)
  • 1 tbsp slivered almonds
  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee

  1. Place all ingredients into a blender (I use this Ninja – makes all of my smoothies and shakes super creamy and buttery smooth.)
  2. Blend until it’s a smooth, thick mixture. To make it thicker, add more ice cubes and/or frozen bananas.
